AI receptionist options for WordPress in 2026, compared

Nine options in three groups, by where the software runs. Published prices, who each one fits, and what to check, including the trade-offs of our own product.

There is no single best AI receptionist for WordPress. The right one depends on a question most comparisons skip: where does the software run, and whose account holds your conversations? This guide groups nine options by that answer. We make one of them, Agent Front Desk, and we say where it falls short.

Every fact about another product below comes from its own website or its WordPress.org listing, checked November 4, 2026. Prices change, so follow the links before you decide.

Group 1: runs inside your WordPress

These plugins run on your own server and call the AI provider with your own API key. Conversations are stored in your WordPress database. You pay the AI provider directly, so you see the real usage cost.

AI Engine

AI Engine by Meow Apps is a chatbot, AI writing tools and an MCP server in one plugin. It has more than 90,000 active installs on WordPress.org. Its site says the chatbots use your own API keys and can run on OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Mistral, Perplexity or OpenRouter, and that Pro adds answers grounded in your own content and voice conversations with visitors. Pro costs $59 a year for one site, $79 for five, or $299 for a lifetime license for up to five sites.

  • Fits: site owners who want a flexible AI toolkit and to choose their model.
  • Check: how you will handle lead capture, booking and CRM sync, if you need them.

WPBot

WPBot by QuantumCloud has more than 5,000 active installs on WordPress.org. Its listing says it connects to AI services only when you enable them and enter your own API key. Pro plans are $39 a year for one site, $99 for two and $189 for five. The top plan, Master, lists live human chat through Slack, a voice chat module and WhatsApp through Meta or Twilio. Lifetime licenses were on sale from $149 when we checked.

  • Fits: WooCommerce stores and agencies that want many modules in one plugin.
  • Check: which features are in which tier, since modules are split across plans.

Agent Front Desk (ours)

Agent Front Desk is a suite of GPL plugins for WordPress: a core chat plugin, plus add-ons for browser voice, an inbound phone line, text messaging, HubSpot and MCP. It answers from your published pages, scores leads, books only after the visitor confirms, and lets your staff take over a live chat. We set each one up by hand for a one-time fee: Chat $1,500, Chat + Voice $2,500, or the Full front desk with a phone line and texting $3,900, with custom connectors typically $1,000 to $3,000. Updates ($199 per site per year) and Care ($99 a month) are optional. After that you pay Anthropic, ElevenLabs and your phone carrier directly at their list prices; our pricing page shows those costs with sources.

  • Fits: businesses on WordPress that want the whole front desk in their own site and someone to set it up.
  • Trade-offs, plainly: chat runs on Claude only, so you need an Anthropic account and cannot use your own model. It is new software in a private beta, and it costs more than a rental in year one. Setup is hands-on, not a two-minute install. WordPress multisite is untested.

Group 2: WordPress plugins for a hosted service

These plugins connect your site to the vendor’s platform. The chat runs and is stored on their servers, and you manage it in their dashboard.

HubSpot

HubSpot’s free WordPress plugin adds forms, live chat, a CRM, email marketing and analytics, and has more than 200,000 active installs. HubSpot’s AI customer agent is a separate product: its knowledge base says it needs a Professional or Enterprise subscription and HubSpot Credits.

  • Fits: teams that already use HubSpot for sales or service.
  • Check: the price of the Professional tier and credits at your volume.

Tidio

Tidio’s plugin, with more than 70,000 active installs, connects your site to a Tidio account. Tidio offers a free plan, a 7-day trial on paid plans, and its Lyro AI agent. Pricing is based on billable conversations and Lyro AI conversations, and the Plus plan starts at $300 a month.

  • Fits: small teams that want live chat and AI replies in one hosted inbox.
  • Check: how many conversations a month you will have, since that drives the plan.

Quickchat AI

Quickchat AI’s WordPress plugin is, in its own words, a thin loader: the widget is served from Quickchat’s CDN and you configure it in their dashboard. The free plan is for personal, non-commercial use. Paid plans run from $9 to $999 a month, priced by AI credits.

  • Fits: businesses that want one hosted AI agent across WordPress and other sites.
  • Check: how many credits your conversations will use, since bigger models use more per message.

Group 3: phone answering services that work alongside your site

These are not WordPress plugins at heart. They answer your phone number, and some add web chat or texting.

Smith.ai

Smith.ai’s AI receptionist answers calls and can transfer a caller to a live receptionist in North America, according to its pricing page. The free plan includes 25 calls a month, then $3.00 a call. Pro is $150 a month for 75 calls, and Enterprise is $500 a month for 300.

  • Fits: businesses where most leads phone in and a human backup matters.

My AI Front Desk

My AI Front Desk’s plan is $99 a month, or $79 a month billed annually, and includes 200 voice minutes, web chat, two-way texting and a CRM, with a 7-day free trial.

  • Fits: businesses that want phone, chat and texting from one vendor at a fixed monthly price.

Goodcall

Goodcall bills per unique customer, not per minute: $79 a month for 100 customers, $129 for 500 and $299 for 2,000. Instead of a trial, you can build and test a demo agent for free and pay when you connect a number.

  • Fits: businesses with repeat callers or long calls, where a per-minute bill would grow.

How to choose

  1. Decide where your data should live. Your WordPress database (group 1) or a vendor’s platform (groups 2 and 3).
  2. Count your volume. Calls, minutes, chats and unique customers in a normal month. The billing units differ, so this is the only way to compare prices.
  3. List the jobs, not the features. Answer questions, capture leads, book, hand over to a person, sync to your CRM. Check each option against your list.
  4. Try it on your own content. Every option above except ours has a free plan, a trial, a demo or a free version. Ours is a hands-on private beta: you get a written scope and quote before anything is built.

We have also published what six vendors publish on their websites and a side-by-side of published prices.
